What is your Love Language?

Love is something that is so broad that it's subject to multiple interpretation, definition, and manifestation. According to Dr. Gary Chapman, author of The Five Love Languages, people speak and understand emotional love in different ways.

One is the through verbal compliments, appreciation, and affirmation such as saying "I love you" or "You are beautiful." Others express their love through visible symbols of love such as gift giving where people manifest thoughtfulness through material things.

Some express their love through acts of service like cooking a meal or preparing their loved one's needs. This may be considered a role or a chore but if done wholeheartedly and in a positive mindset, these are indeed expressions of love.

Physical intimacy or touch is also a way communicating affection. For married couples, holding hands, kissing and embracing are very common love languages.

Lastly, spending quality time is another great way to express love. However, this love language has been commonly taken for granted given that we have our fast-paced lives.

This is something that Val and I realized when we were still in Metro Manila. We were so preoccupied with work and everyday stress such as traffic and chores that we stopped spending quality time with each other.

Since then, we started having pampering sessions together. Here are some ideas that you might want to consider:

A relaxing Mani and Pedi trip at Nailaholics.

Spending time in this urban nail salon and spa provides couples with a distinct pampering experience. They have exceptional services and treatments that will surely give you a stress-free experience. If you are in Bacolod, Nailaholics is located at 3rd floor, North Wing, SM City Bacolod.

If you don't feel like getting your nails done, we also recommend their foot spa and foot massage treatments.

Feel Good and Be Beautiful Dates.

I have been telling Val that he is my reflection and I am his. As partners, we must look out for each other's welfare. We have to remind each other to never forget taking care of ourselves. Thus, some of our quality time together is spent when we either get a haircut or perhaps a waxing session.

In SM City Bacolod, the stores of Hey Sugar and Sports Barbers is right next to each. This makes it very ideal that while I get my waxing treatment at Hey Sugar, Val can get his haircut and favorite back massage from his expert barber, Alex at Sports Barbers.

How about you what is your love language? Keep in mind that regardless of our choice, what's important is that we are able to give and feel love.

P.S. Want to spend quality time with your loved ones? Don't miss the National Pampering Day on October 17, 2017 in ALL NAILAHOLICS BRANCHES NATIONWIDE. Enjoy a choice of FREE Manicure, Foot Spa or Foot Massage from 10AM - 1PM.

My Job Kept Me From Visiting Coffee Shops

Freelancing or working at home has a lot of perks and advantages. These include more time to spend with the family, no more daily commute, and traffic as well as more flexibility on what to wear, schedule and tasks.

As perfect as it may sound, working at home also has its disadvantages. This includes instability of work, lesser employee benefits, and perks (most of the time you have to shoulder it personally) and less social interaction.

For me, working at home meant limited time to go out and do errands. Since I am not "out of the house" most of the time just like office-based workers. I could not do errands or drop by my favorite shop or restaurant on my way home. I would have to plan it out and do everything in one go. I remember when I was still working in Makati, my friends and I would drop by our favorite coffee shop after work to chill out and enjoy my favorite iced coffee. This is actually one of the many things I miss from corporate work.

Since freelancers are known to be creative, I discovered a way to enjoy my favorite iced coffee at home. Maskape Coffee Brown and Creamy makes a delicious iced coffee for only Php 5.00. Yes, that cheap but it tastes like coffee ice cream.

Maskape can also make a good cold brew or smoothie. I was even thinking that perhaps I can even use it as an ingredient for Tiramisu or Mocha Cake. (Will find time to bake and let you know)

What makes Maskape Coffee special?
Maskape is made of robusta coffee beans which are low in acidity and is known to have more antioxidants. This helps reduce the risk of some health problems including diabetes and liver cirrhosis.

Maskape has other variants: White and Creamy, Strong and Rich, Original and Barako Gold. It is available in supermarkets nationwide for only Php 5.00 (SRP) and in all 7-eleven stores for only 10.00 for TwinPacks.

It is proudly Philippine-made by Mighty and Strong (MAS) Food Corporation. So, try Maskape today. It is about time we show our love and #supportlocal. To learn more about Maskape, you may visit their website www.masfoods.com.ph  you can also check for updates through their social media page https://www.facebook.com/Maskape3in1/

The Dangers of Side Effects Presented as Main Effects

In the medical world, proper use of words is highly called for because a simple mistake could complicate things usually unwanted for the patients. Because this field has full of jargons that are mostly too technical to not easily be sifted and digested by the general public, putting them in a layman’s term is indeed helpful.

A good example of which are the words “side effect” and “main effect”. These, are more often than not, interchanged or used instead of the other. Doing so is not just wrong but also dangerous to the people’s health.

A side effect of any substance pertains to the result beyond the main or primary action that is intended by the physician giving drug prescription. The doctor, likewise, foresees this extra consequence.

For instance, the patient might not be conscious of the side effect of unwanted hair growth elsewhere on the body while using vasodilator drug called Minoxidil to treat hypertension. The physician, nevertheless, is very well aware of it, as well as other implications, such as burning or irritation of the eye, itching, and redness or irritation at the treated area. By and large, doctors suggest that patients should ignore the side effects unless serious and often alert the sick persons about their likelihood.

But not all the side effects are boon. They are bane, too, hence, they are often used as a therapeutic benefit in the pharmaceutical industry. Like the Minoxidil which, initially was developed to treat high blood pressure. People taking it reported an unusual side effect: Hair began to grow on various parts of their bodies. In this case, the downside of the drug is controlled and employed for a beneficial and therapeutic effect judiciously. It is noted that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved prescription of two percent (2%) Minoxidil topical solution for hair loss in men in 1988 and for women in 1992.

An adverse effect, on the other hand, is identified as an outcome wherein the reaction occurs over and beyond the main and wanted action of a medicine. Both the physician and the patient don’t know about it as a consequence of taking such treatment. It can happen simply due to incorrect dosage. Undesirably, this is very harmful as it can exacerbate the prognosis of the disease. Occasionally, if the adverse effect is too serious, there might be a need for hospitalization.

Just like the Sildenafil Citrate— a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. Its most common adverse reactions (≥ 2%) include headache, flushing, dyspepsia, abnormal vision, nasal congestion, back pain, myalgia, nausea, dizziness, and rash. Patients should seek emergency treatment if an erection lasts over four hours. Patients should stop Sildenafil Citrate and seek medical care if a sudden decrease or loss of hearing and also that of vision in one or both eyes.

Since side effects paired with adverse effects can be fatal and need to be reversed or given antidote immediately, a very extra cautious effort not to interchange them with the main effects in the prescription process must be always observed. After all, it’s the lives of patients at stake here.

It’s ironic to note that people who seek treatments for their ailments or to prolong their lives become sicker or morbidly end up six feet underground simply because of such medical error. So, it’s still best to deal with health conditions like hair loss the natural way, especially with NOVUHAIR that offers the safe and natural effects.

With 19 natural ingredients—mostly standardized herbal extracts, essential oils and co-factor nutrients—it does not only help prevent the hair loss malady, but also aid in stimulating growth of the “crowning glory.” Set aside those chemical-based topical scalp solutions out there. Choose natural, choose NOVUHAR!

What Pasalubong to Bring from Davao City?

Whenever we travel for business or leisure, it is natural for us to buy pasalubong for families and friends. Key chains, shirts and small trinkets are very common. However, if you are visiting Davao City then there is only one pasalubong that will complete your Davao experience.

Apo ni Lola Durian Delicacies has grown strong over the years to become the No. 1 pasalubong must-have. It's main branch is located at 28 San Miguel Village, Matina, Davao City. They are famous for their delicious durian candies available in different flavors.

Their best seller is actually the candy bar available in different variants too. I super love the Creamy Durian Bar and the Mangosteen Yema Bar. These are highly recommended because they are so yummy that you would love to have a big chunk of it.

You have to make sure that you get some durian and mangosteen tarts too. They are actually my favorites. The crust are always freshly baked and the filling is just perfect.

Recently, they have expanded their array of products. Apo ni Lola Durian Delicacies also offers Durian Pie (which I am going to review in a different post), Durian Jam and Durian Hopia.

On a tight budget? You don't have to worry because their products are very affordable.

For orders, inquiries and deliveries, you may contact them at 09204103333 or 082-2895099. They also have a branch in Abreeza Mall.

And now, I am running a quick giveaway so, that one of my readers will have the chance to taste these yummy treats from Apo ni Lola Durian Delicacies. Just follow the mechanics found in the rafflecopter widget. Don't forget to tag My Metro Lifestyle and Apo ni Lola Durian Delicacies in your shared posts and follow all the steps in rafflecopter so, that your entries will be valid.

Road Trip: Manila to Bacolod

Last May 12, 2015, Val and I relocated  to Bacolod to say goodbye to the crazy pollution, endless traffic and fast-paced Metro Manila life. It was a big decision to let go of our jobs as well as the great opportunities that we have. Not to mention that we'll be missing our friends and loved ones. But hey, we are so ready to take our married life to the next level and get ready for a new adventure!

Our whole new adventure starts with our "epic" journey. It is the longest land trip I have ever taken. Normally, it should take you 18-20 hours however, we had a lot of stops thus, ours was a bit longer.

We left around 12:30am bound for Batangas via SLEX and Star Tollways. We wanted to leave a bit late to avoid the traffic in EDSA since we're from way up North. We arrived at the Batangas port around 4:00am but we were late for the RORO trip and waited for the next one at 5am. While waiting, we just decided to have some breakfast.

We left Batangas port around 5:30am bound for Calapan, Mindoro. It was actually the best time to travel since we are in the middle of sea during sunrise, Watching the sun rise was a liberating experience as it marked the beginning of our new adventure.

Even Crumpy enjoyed the trip since you can feel the wind brushing against your skin.

We arrived at Calapan Port around 8:30am and we are up for another 3-hour drive going to Roxas City port. This is our first time in this place and honestly, do not have any idea where to go. Our game plan was just follow the signs (which was sufficient and very helpful) plus our handy google maps. The road condition is good. Kudos for the nautical highway project!

We passed several small towns and stopped for drinks and gas along the way.

We reached Roxas City port around 11:30am but unfortunately, the next RORO bound for Caticlan will leave by 3:30pm. I guess that means we have ample time to rest and eat before the next trip. Since we barely know the place, we opted to have lunch at Andok's (a known company in Metro Manila) and we had a simple rice and bbq meal. Andok's is just very near the port. The sun was scorching hot that we felt uneasy. So, Val and I decided to use the port's shower room for Php 20.00/head.

Our trip from Roxas to Caticlan was quite long (approximately 5 hours) via Montenegro Shipping Lines. We were already tired and sleepy but had no place to really rest. Val and I decided to stay on the upper most part of the ship.

We are were also very lucky to see the beautiful sunset on the later part of the trip.

We arrived in Caticlan around 8:30pm and we decided to stay overnight there. Unfortunately, all hotels and inn are fully booked because of the APEC Summit and we did not have any reservations. We tried to ask a few locals for suggestions and they recommended that we travel all the way to Kalibo proper to get a room.

It took as approximately 2 hours to get to Kalibo. The roads are too dark and no light posts available. There wasn't any signage on the road (unlike the ones in Mindoro.) On the brighter side, there were checkpoints and PNP outposts every 1 km because of the APEC Summit. So, at least we were able to ask directions every now and then.

You would know that you've reach Kalibo once you pass by the famous Kalibo bridge. Unfortunately, I was so tired and it was dark that we weren't able to take pictures. We were lucky enough to find a pet friendly inn immediately during the night. I made a separate review of the inn, here.

Around 10pm the next day, we decided to continue the drive going to Dumangas port. It is best to travel during the day because the roads are quite confusing with all the turns and no signages. You'll be able pass by Capiz before you reach Iloilo. We actually had lunch in Capiz since there's a Mang Inasal and Deco's in Mambusao proper.

We reached Dumangas port around 3PM and did not expect the problem getting into the RORO. Apparently, one of the ships of Montenegro broke down and Tristar would need a reservation a day before. Our only chance is a no-show of passengers with reservation.

We spent the afternoon chatting with other travelers and I can say we had made friends along the way. We learned that some of them have been there for a week but can't get their trucks on board because it's fully booked. Just like us, they are on the wait list. Being on the wait list, not only means "first come first served" but they are also considering the size of your vehicle. We got lucky and got on board around 8:00pm and then finally, arrived in Bacolod around 11:30pm.

About the fees and expenses, here's what we actually paid.

Toll Fee ( SLEX)  - Php 164.00 + 96.00
Toll Fee ( Star Tollways) - Php 67.00

Batangas Roro Terminal Fee - Php 129.00
Additional Passenger (Terminal) - Php 30.00
RORO Fee via Asian Marine (Batangas - Calapan) - Php 1,440.00

Roxas Roro Terminal Fee - Php 129.00
Toll Fee (Roxas City) - Php 50.00
Coast Guard Fee - Php 20.00
Entrance Fee - Php 30.00
RORO Fee via Montenegro (Roxas - Caticlan) - Php 3,840.00
Additional Passenger (RORO) - Php 408.00

Dumangas Port Roro Terminal Fee - Php 129.00
RORO Fee via Tristar - Php 800.00

Bacolod/BREDCO Terminal Fee - Php 375.50

Well, it was costly and tiring but the experience is all worth it. Indeed, it was "our adventure of a lifetime."

If you would like to get a copy of the screenshots of the map we used, then send us a message

Planning your next road trip or have any questions, just leave a comment below.

UPDATE: I lost my hard drive and no longer have access to the screenshots of the maps. However, if you have questions, just send me a message. So sorry!

How to Hire the Right Contractor?

You might find yourself in need of the services of a skilled contractor at some point in the future. A contractor is a person who is in charge of a crew of workers during a construction project. Needless to say, you need to be sure you hire a really good contractor. Otherwise, there is a chance that your construction work will not be done correctly. Therefore, it is important that you take the hiring of your contractor very seriously for the safety of your family. Here are some of the things that should be your primary concerns when you are going to be hiring a contractor.

1. What sort of track record does the contractor have?

You should always investigate the track record of any person you are thinking about hiring to do work at your home. This is especially the case when it comes to contractors. You need to be sure that this person is legit and has not been sued by any of his previous clients. A great place to find out a lot of good info about contractors in your area is the Better Business Bureau (BBB) website. They will give ratings to contractors based on a variety of factors. You should only consider hiring a contractor if he has received a high BBB rating. It is always important to know exactly who you are dealing with where your contractor is concerned.

2. Does the contractor have a valid license?

Why is it important for the garage remodeling contractor you hire to be licensed? You need to be sure that the contractor who is in charge of your construction project has received all of the necessary training that your state requires. There is no way to determine this unless you see a contractor's valid license to work in your state. Many people try to work as a contractor without a valid license. They are able to do this because many people simply assume that the contractor they hire is licensed. However, that is not always the case. Hiring an unlicensed contractor could mean that you will receive construction work that is substandard and dangerous.

3. Are the contractor and all of his workers covered by a current insurance policy?

It is essential that every person who performs construction work on your property have insurance coverage. This is because damage to your home and property can happen during the course of the construction project. The insurance coverage that the contractor has will compensate you for any damage that is sustained to your property. Do not take the contractor's word for it that he is insured. Make sure you ask to see his valid proof of insurance.

#WHERETONEXT : SADDLEBACK HAVEN

Summer has officially started. It simply means packing our bags, getting out of the house and enjoying a much-deserved vacation.

With the right research and timing, no one has a concrete excuse of not being able to afford a vacation. We have so many options nowadays including the free seats offered by airlines and no more fuel surcharge.

I have always dreamed of spending one summer vacation is a mountain haven but I do not have the courage to go mountain climbing. I want to be close to nature yet keeping the luxuries. Something cozy, inspiring and perfect.

So, do you have any guesses about our #WHERETONEXT destination?
Well, it's part of the 7,107 islands of the Philippines and it's going to be at the SADDLEBACK HAVEN.

SADDLEBACK HAVEN is a villa 2,800 feet above sea level. It is a 45-minute drive from Davao City.

It features cool climate, fresh air, and lush greenery. The view at night is also breathtaking.

The rooms are carefully designed to ensure that you'll have a good night sleep and prepare you for a day full of activities.

Since part of our plan is to be close to nature, we are very excited to take a short hike nearby.

If you are brave enough to face the cool weather, you can even take a dip in the nearby river.

Horseback riding is also available but I am still undecided about it. I am only certain that I will be bringing lots of marshmallows because I am looking forward to spending the night underneath the stars and enjoy the bonfire.

So, go ahead and have the vacation you have always dreamed of and feel at home with your #WhereToNext destination. It's about time you pack your bags and enjoy the world.

Donate Your Old Clothes in Any H&M Branch and Get Discount Vouchers

Did you know that you can donate your old clothes to H&M?

H&M Philippines encourages customers to bring their old clothes (whether in good or bad condition) in exchange for store discount vouchers. This is their way of helping lessen the garbage brought about by the fashion industry. After all, fashion is too precious to end up in the landfills.

How to donate?

There is no minimum number of pieces. You just have to fill a paper bag with old clothing (no matter what brand or condition) and bring to any H&M store nationwide. However, please take note that there is a limit of only 2 vouchers per customer per day regardless of how much clothes you are donating. (Approximately one bag full of clothes is equal to one 15% discount voucher)

If you are curious what does H&M does with these donated clothes, these old garments are collected by their partner, I:Collect. These are then sorted into three categories:

  • Rewear – old clothes that are still in good condition and can be resold.
  • Reuse – old clothes and textiles that can be reused and turned into other materials like cleaning cloths.
  • Recycle – everything else is turned into textile fibers, and used for things like insulation.
The proceeds are donated to H&M Foundation and split between social projects and recycling projects. Also, for every kilogram of garment collected, I:Collect donates 0.02 euros UNICEF Philippines. You can read more about it here

So, what are you waiting for? It's about time we all get stylish yet responsible Filipino citizens.
